The Telephone Box
The original purpose of the telephone box was to enable two (or more) people to communicate via telephone with those in the telephone box enjoying a modicom of privacy even though they are in a public space. But now that almost everyone has a mobile telephone the telephone box has had to move with the times. In these photographs I try to show just how the ubiqitous box has evolved in recent years, becoming an advertising hoarding, a message board (often for nefarious purposes), a recycling bin for coffee cups, a litter bin and even, sadly, a toilet. In some cases, nature seems to be swallowing up the lonely and unloved box. It's hard to know just how much longer the telephone box will adorn our streets, but I hope these images will remind us of their evolution even if, eventually, they become extinct.
